The scenery for West Side Story was a heavy scaffolding affair, The entire set was designed to be climbable. All of the scaffolding was interlocked in some way or other, so that it was safe to climb over. The eventual plan was signed off by a specialist engineering company and the eventual construction was given a scaffolding certificate of safety. The Upstage wall had a 6’ wire fence in front of it, stage right had a balcony and stage left had an enclosure, a shop door and a wider entrance for the bar etc to be brought on. The sheer scale of the construction was testing, but the end result was exactly right for the piece. |
