Return to the Forbidden Planet - Scenery

The scenery was made up from seven pieces of steeldeck bolted together in a semi-circle. The central deck was highest and supported the projection screen. There were exits DSL and DSR, US through the Airlock and US high either side of the projector screen. The set was dressed with MDF painted to give a space age flight deck. The upstage edge was dressed with a steel effect and the top was open. This gave a view to the world beyond the space craft.

The trussing shown here was eventually replaced by ropelights due to cost.

Behind the space craft small pieces of truss were flown to represent the space station prior to lift off. These were dropped out of site during the lift off sequence. Similarly, rocky mountains were flown into view during the crash landing and out again at the second lift off.

A fixed wire was used to carry the shuttle craft over the audience for the SO’s escape.
