The majority of the lighting rig for Oliver was a 2 colour wash (cold and warm). In addition to this was a substantial primary was to give lift during the songs. There was also a dark blue wash to give impact to the night scenes. In addition to this there was single colour area pick up for the downstage aprons and the upper deck. USR was a window in the set, which was covered in Lee 250 and lit from behind. Cantatas were used to provide a cross wash downstage of the black gauze. The gauze was also lit with a rain effect projector. Specials were provided for Fagin and Bill during the quartet. Nancy and Dodger were lit using followspots. A further special was used for Oliver as he sat on the stairs at the end of “Where is Love.” This was subsequently used as Fagin discovers Oliver watching him count his money. 8 Birdies were used at extreme close range to light the “God is Love” sign. Birdies were also used to light entrances under the upper deck. Breakup gobos were used on the black gauze to distract the eye. A glass moon gobo was used as a backdrop to Oliver singing “Where is Love?” This was run from a Strand SL10 to ensure that there was only a minimal amount of keystoning. Two 2KW tungsten followspots were used with cold/warm colours. These were slightly de-focused to give soft edges. I experimented with the use of skewed cloud gobos on the cyc, which worked well. Lee lighting gels were used throughout and their colour numbers are shown in the rectangles on the design. Lighting circuit numbers are shown in ovals. |
